The Day Christ Died - 03/05/10

The Day Christ Died

This month, I’m preaching a series of sermons that literally tracks the 24 hours of the day Christ died. I’ve assigned it to April 5th, A.D. 30. This Jewish day actually starts on Wednesday at 6pm.  More about that in a minute.
Each sermon will cover three hours, so for instance, the first sermon will cover the time between 6pm and 9pm of April 5th, A.D. 30. We will, as always, primarily look at one passage, but will draw in all the information from not only the Gospels but also from outside the Gospels, even looking to some Jewish traditions of the time and some secular records that will help us understand the politics of the day.
The A.D. 30 year seems to be the year most widely accepted as the day Christ died and it also matches up with the year of Jubilee, which swings my vote to that year as I believe that Christ died in a Jubilee year. This was year in the Old Testament that was every 49 years and was a year of deliverance or atonement. God seemed to have orchestrated great things in Jubilee years, like the dedication of Solomon’s Temple and other things. Some even start the Jubilee system with creation and then there are all sorts of great things to tie in, but I’ve not studied that theory yet.
Another interesting item is that if the year Christ died was a Jubilee year, then the Jews added a Sabbath Day onto the annual Sabbath and called it a High Sabbath and sacrificed one lamb that was called the Lamb of Jubilee or Atonement. This lamb was slain at 3pm on Thursday, on the High Sabbath. And thus the reason that I think Christ was crucified on Thursday. Oh and the math works better too on Christ being in the tomb three days; Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
This series will be both in the morning and the evening and culminate on Palm Sunday evening with Christ being laid in a borrowed tomb, obviously a great way to end with Easter next week.

Thankful for the day Christ died,

God's Wonderful Grace - 02/15/10

I’m beginning a three week series today on God’s Grace and like usual, I’ve already learned more than I’m sure I’ll be able to preach on about this topic. I have a practice of reading at least 4 hours about the topic or passage of the sermon and as I was reading about “Grace”, boy was there some rich stuff.
I first noticed how that preaching about God’s Grace must contain a section on God’s law and our condemnation under it. After all, the Apostle Paul did that very thing in Ephesians 2 when he laid out our hopeless state before telling the Ephesians of Grace. Here once again is the concept of preaching God’s law along with the Gospel for man must know of his lostness and then he will truly appreciate salvation.
Secondly, I noticed just how far God stooped down to help us. For God to offer us salvation, it would be like us inviting into our home and family someone who had for years, stole from us and ignored us and committed crimes against us and yet that is exactly what God does through His extraordinary love. He forgives sinners, He saves sinners and then He adopts sinners and makes plans for them to enjoy His Heaven.
And thirdly, I learned even more about salvation. Ephesians 2 says that we are saved by Grace through faith. Well, of course I accept that statement but I’ve often wondered about the specifics of that “faith”. How much or exactly in what? Well, Paul says that part of salvation is God giving us spiritually life or quickening us. Jesus was the living Word and when He called forth Lazarus, Lazarus came to life. Why? Lazarus believed in the oral Words of Christ and walked out of that tomb.
And so while Jesus was here on earth so many years ago, people were healed and saved and raised from the dead because they believed in the Word of Christ. We now have the written Word but it is no less powerful. In fact, Hebrews states that the Word of God is powerful and quick or may I say quickening or life giving. I immediately thought of 1 Corinthians 1 where it talks about the power of the preached Word and how it is by it that people are saved. I also thought of Romans 9 where it asks how people will be saved if they do not hear the Word.
And so this morning, I have the great privilege of preaching God’s Word and specifically preaching about God’s law and God’s Grace and the Gospel of Christ and anyone who hears it, if they believe in God’s Word, if they put their faith in it, is able to accept God’s Wonderful Grace. It truly is amazing!
